About Gijs
Gijs Hijmans
I have a career as a physicist and manager with a commercial tint. With a wide background I am at home in political environments, highly regulated environments (space industry, EU projects, regulation heavy projects), comfortable working close to business development and always maintain one eye on technology.
With that eye on technology, I am capable of understanding experts, determine courses of action on technical developments and documenting cooperation in an organized manner.
With my experience in writing proposals for the space industry, navigating complex funding environments and setting up consortia, I am especially suited for roles that work in this part of the projects lifecycle, taking it from the first idea through a cooperation to a development that can stand on its own.
Beyond this I have a 15 year history in coaching on and executing scientific and technical communication. From helping run a science communication foundation for almost 10 years, through coaching and teaching the members of teams I’ve managed.
Over the years I’ve given workshops, one-on-one coaching in communication and presentation training.
This experience has been condensed into the communication for technical people course.

Selected projects
The RINO foundation grew during the time of my responsibilities to the largest science communication show in Europe. With 75 volunteers, RINO travels the country and reaches a percentage of all high school students in the Netherlands.
For this organization I was responsible for finding, training and mentoring new volunteers, including the translation of scientific concepts, presentation training and other aspects, such as safety.
Besides helping perform a complete overhaul of all operations and methods to enable a much larger organization I co-developed 2 new science demonstration shows, on low temperatures and on a variety of scientific concepts.
With RINO I’ve presented to over 30.000 people, in groups from 5 people to 1200.

cosine (which is always spelled lower case) is a small space company that makes small camera’s and other optical instruments largely for the space industry.
Here I’ve played a role in cooperation and projects with many partners, organizing, planning and controlling projects. Project plans were turned into (inter)company politics have also played a large role, and I’ve written and negotiated roadmaps for the Dutch government which determine scientific and R&D funding.

I am currently the lead for attaining government related funding, such as EU funding and Dutch governmental funding for InnoFlex and fulfilled the same role at Sensiks in 2021 for a short project.
Several funding applications have been led by me (national and EU), including managing the writing process and cooperation with partners.

University of Twente, Sensiks, TNO, Hijmanstech
Currently, I am working part time to aid a consortium (University of Twente, Sensiks, TNO, Hijmanstech) in setting up a cooperation for the development of inhabitable robots or Avatars. These are robots that can be remotely controlled by a human that experiences everything in the environment the robot is in, including touch, sound, VR and even smell. In a very real sense the operator becomes the robot.
We are creating an ecosystem to enable these partners to remain a frontrunner in this development and enable commercialization as soon as possible. I have a program manager/business developer role in this cooperation (part time, limited scope for the foreseeable future).
For this role I recently led an international group on writing a 3 million Euro EU Horizon Europe funding project.
